Honor, Courage & Commitment

The National Museum of the United States Marine Corps. Photo by Ron Cogswell. Public domain.

The National Museum of the Marine Corps is located in Triangle, Virginia near the Marine Corps Base Quantico. The museum was recently reopened for the first time this year after the installation of two new aircraft. This is just the beginning of an ambitious, but exciting expansion for the museum.

The museum makes for a very fun adventure. The exhibit spaces are informative as the history of the Marine Corps is traced from its beginning when the Continental Congress authorized the formation of two battalions in 1775. In the World War I gallery, a visitor can believe they are racing across a battlefield in France or "try" to be a Marine in the "Making Marines Gallery."

The Leatherneck Gallery, under its soaring glass dome, features the Marine Experience, with suspended aircraft, a granite wall with famous Marine quotes and helicopters "depicting the first deployment of combat troops in Korea." Visit USMCMuseum.com to learn all about the exhibits and visiting the museum.

The museum also sponsors many opportunities for families, scouts and other organizations to learn about the Marines and the history of our country. They have volunteer opportunities as well as internships for students.

One of the other great things about the website is the online exhibit. Currently the site's online exhibit is a fascinating piece on silver and the Marines. It is an easy learning experience to scroll through the different headings and read about different ship christening bottles or look at the silver dipped gloves of John Philip Sousa. The "Rifle Challenge Trophy" is very beautiful.

The museum is located about 30 miles south of Washington DC and about 75 miles north of Richmond, off of I95. It is a wonderful way to celebrate our country and the Marine Corps.
