Make it a Day On, Not a Day Off

"Life's most persistent and urgent question: 'What are you doing for others?'" - Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin Luther King's birthday will be observed on Monday, January 16, 2017. As we begin a new year and a new period in our nation's history, we can take the time to reflect on many of the ideals that Martin Luther King put forward. One of his firmest beliefs was the belief that life is meaningless if you are not serving others. To this goal, many schools and institutions have chosen to institute this day as a day of service, instead of just a day off from work or school. The Corporation for National and Community Service website includes links on searching for places to serve as well as lesson plans for educators for grades 3rd - 12th.

The service links not only have suggestions for MLK Day of Service, but also suggestions for other opportunities to serve in your community. Sign Up Genius also had suggestions for ways to serve your community. Below are a few:

  1. 1. Check first with your local fire/EMS/police organizations and then have a teddy bear/stuffed animal drive. It is great for local first responders to have a new stuffed animal to comfort a child during an emergency.
  2. 2. Remember service men and women: send care packages or write letters of thanks for their service. Check out Operation Gratitude.
  3. 3. Help with hunger. The richest country in the world has an enormous number of people that go hungry every day. Contact your local food bank or soup kitchen to see ways you can help.
