Everyone who visits Texas always wants to go Fredericksburg. The town is known for its German heritage and its most famous son, Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, who was born in the small town of Fredericksburg, Texas in 1885. His grandfather owned a hotel that was shaped like a steamboat and that is where young Chester lived. The hotel is now the Admiral Nimitz Museum which is part of the National Museum of the Pacific. The Admiral Nitmitz Museum documents stories of the Admiral's life and the history of the building. Nimitz's father had died about six months before he was born and his grandfather was the most important man in his life. His grandfather, Charles Henry Nimitiz, was German-born and a former seaman in the German Merchant Marine. His advice probably served his grandson well. He told him, "The sea - like life itself - is a stern taskmaster. The best way to get along with either is to learn all you can, then do your best and don't worry - especially about things over which you have no control" (

At the age of 15 he was accepted to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis. Admiral Chester Nimitz was "Commander in Chief of the U.S. Pacific Fleet for U.S. naval forces and Commander in Chief, Pacific Ocean Areas for U.S. and Allied air, land and sea forces during WII" (

The museum was originally designed to honor Nimitz but according to Wikipedia, "the complex was renamed in 2000 to the Admiral Nimitz State Historic Site-National Museum of the Pacific and is dedicated exclusively to the Pacific theater battles of World War II. The conning tower of USS Pintado (SS-387) is at the main entrance." Another interesting aspect of the museum is the Japanese Garden of Peace which was gifted to the town of Fredericksburg on its 130th anniversary on May 8, 1976.
