Walking Through History

Although in many parts of the United States we have experienced a relatively mild winter, everyone still breathes a sigh of hope as spring approaches. One of the great ways to experience spring is to be outside with your friends or family while learning about our nation's history at the same time.

Confederate Army crossed the Potomac, observed by Union scouts One way to do this is to visit historical battlefields, national military parks, or national historical parks. This year continues the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War and many of the battlefields and parks are holding special programs for the sesquicentennial celebration. The Battle of Pea Ridge (Arkansas) fought in early March 1862 had its anniversary marked with several programs including infantry and cavalry presentations. The bloodiest battle of the war, Antietam, will have its 150th anniversary on Sept 17, 2012 with the anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg occurring in July 2013. Other great parks to explore include Harpers Ferry National Historical Park and Valley Forge National Historical Park. There is no need to wait. Go now. The parks have great guidedand self-directed tours. (See National Park Service website, www.nps.gov)

The Pennsylvania Monument at Gettysburg National Military Park.

The national historical parks commemorate events other than the Civil War. A great day can be spent in San Antonio, Texas at The Alamo, strolling through the National Mall in DC, or visiting the National Park at the Presidio of San Francisco. These are all great adventures to remind us of the men and women who have served our country and keep us true to our values and traditions.

Other programs to consider this spring are traveling history programs, such as The Traveling Wall, which is a replica of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington DC. The Traveling Wall Memorial reminds us of the great sacrifices made for our country during the Vietnam War and allows people to experience the wall who do not have the opportunity to visit DC. There are other organizations, such as The Moving Wall and American Veterans Traveling Tribute that also have replicas of the wall and bring similar programs to areas all over the country.

Enjoy the spring.
