New Way to Support a Veteran: "Give Back to Those Who Have Given"

On a recent visit to Florida, I came across a poster showing an elderly veteran emerging from the cockpit of an obviously old biplane. The poster was at a senior facility and as I read on I learned that there was an organization that took veterans on rides, in planes similar to something they may have flown in during their war years.

The organization that arranges these trips is called Ageless Aviation Dreams Foundation. Ageless Aviation Dreams Foundation is a non-profit and according to their website, they are dedicated to "honoring seniors and United States military veterans. Their primary focus is on individuals living in long-term care facilities." Their motto is "Give Back to Those Who Have Given."

Through donations, the Foundation provides flights in a Boeing Stearman biplane, the same aircraft used to train many military aviators in the 1940s. The organization has a plane located in California, Illinois, Florida and soon San Antonio.

The group participates in local civic events, like the Big Give SA, where they are trying to raise enough funds to purchase a vintage plane to permanently locate in San Antonio. The Big Give SA is a 24-hour online day of giving in San Antonio to raise awareness of the impact non-profits make on the San Antonio community. This year's Big Give SA is on May 3rd.

Ageless Aviation gave its first flight in San Antonio in 2014 and realized, with the large number of veterans living in the area, it was an ideal place to permanently base a plane at Stinson Field. One local facility, Blue Skies of Texas, formerly known as Air Force Village, is the home to many veterans. Some of the lucky residents of the facility will get a ride in the biplane. One of the youngest riders is 94 while the oldest is a former WWII test pilot who is now 103. What an exciting day for these veterans.

If you have a family member or friend that you think would love this adventure, there is an application on their website. There are also tons of pictures and stories about the veterans who have had a great time on their dream flight. See this CBS news site to get a taste of the experience.
