January 15, 2018 is the 32nd year that Martin Luther King, Jr. has been honored and this year will mark the 50th year anniversary of his assassination on April 4, 1968 at the age of 39. King would be proud that the day honoring his memory is not just another "I don't have school or work day." More and more communities are seizing the opportunity to teach their students and their community the importance and reward of service. One of the organizations is Volunteer New York. This organization has an amazing number of activities planned for the MLK weekend, including helping at food pantries, making no-sew fleece blankets for the sick, bagging food for the homeless, learning CPR ... the possibilities are endless.

In Atlanta, the home of the Martin Luther King, Jr. center, Hands On Atlanta will coordinate over 3000 volunteers to help communities, schools and nonprofits. In addition, the King Center has a ten-day series of exhibits and lectures about King. There is also an MLK Marathon and Half Marathon in Atlanta to raise awareness and fundraise.

Houston has a huge MLK Grande Parade, with a youth marching band competition, a battle of the bands and a large parade in downtown Houston. The University of Houston will have several activities and Rice University, like many colleges across the country, will continue to teach with a candlelight vigil and celebration on Sunday.

In Los Angeles, L.A. Works will join together to restore and beautify Lincoln High, which it describes as "an institution serving some of the most vulnerable beneficiaries of the DREAM Act, in hopes that our contribution will dignify a space in which all Americans are seen as equals." Los Angeles also has a large MLK Parade.
